چکیده

We describe a modification of a fourth-order accurate “moving puncture” evolution code, where by replacing spatial fourth-order accurate differencing operators in the bulk of the grid by a specific choice of sixth-order accurate stencils we gain significant improvements in accuracy. We illustrate the performance of the modified algorithm with an equal-mass simulation covering nine orbits. PACS numbers: 04.25.Dm, 04.30.Db, 95.30.Sf

Horizon boundary condition for black hole spacetimes.

It was recently shown that spacetime singularities in numerical relativity could be avoided by excising a region inside the apparent horizon in numerical evolutions. In this paper we report on the details of the implementation of this scheme. The scheme is based on using (1) a horizon locking coordinate which locks the coordinate system to the geometry, and (2) a finite differencing scheme whic...

Spherically Symmetric Black Hole Spacetimes – II: Time Evolution

This is the second in a series of papers describing a 3+1 computational scheme for the numerical simulation of dynamic black hole spacetimes. In this paper we focus on the problem of numerically time-evolving a given black-hole– containing initial data slice in spherical symmetry. We avoid singularities via the “black-hole exclusion” or “horizon boundary condition” technique, where the slices m...

Black Hole Excision with Multiple Grid Patches

When using black hole excision to numerically evolve a black hole spacetime with no continuous symmetries, most 3+1 finite differencing codes use a Cartesian grid. It’s difficult to do excision on such a grid because the natural r = constant excision surface must be approximated either by a very different shape such as a contained cube, or by an irregular and non-smooth “LEGO sphere” which may ...

Approximate analytical solutions to the initial data problem of black hole binary systems

We present approximate analytical solutions to the Hamiltonian and momentum constraint equations, corresponding to systems composed of two black holes with arbitrary linear and angular momentum. The analytical nature of these initial data solutions makes them easier to implement in numerical evolutions than the traditional numerical approach of solving the elliptic equations derived from the Ei...

Controlling reflections from mesh refinement interfaces in numerical relativity

A leading approach to improving the accuracy on numerical relativity simulations of black hole systems is through fixed or adaptive mesh refinement techniques. We describe a generic numerical error which manifests as slowly converging, artificial reflections from refinement boundaries in a broad class of mesh-refinement implementations, potentially limiting the effectiveness of meshrefinement t...
